SHIV NADAR

Determined to give back to the society
that nurtured him, Shiv Nadar has been
quietly supporting many critical social
causes. Better known as the founder
of the $ 5 billion global Enterprise
- HCL, he has also founded the not-for-profit
SSN Institutions Chennai; enabling world
class higher education for students
across socio-economic strata. In a short
span of ten years since inception, the
SSN College of Engineering is today
among the top ten private engineering
colleges in India (Outlook, June 2007),
The Institutions offer merit scholarships
worth $ 1 million to over 400 students
every year. Similarly, the Shiv Nadar
Foundation is committed to philanthropic
education in the Northern part of India
through the proposed Shiv Nadar University
and ‘VidyaGyan’.
The “VidyaGyan” public schools in Uttar
Pradesh that will provide free, world
class education to rural children from
economically disadvantaged backgrounds,
with the belief that quality education
to a select few will take the positive
impact of education to where it can
truly uplift & transform lives and help
narrow the socio-economic divide.
Shiv Nadar was conferred the Padma Bhushan
Award - the third highest civilian honor
conferred by the President of India
in January 2008, in recognition of not
just his contribution to trade & industry
in India but also his deep commitment
to public good.
T.S.R SUBRAMANIAN
Trustee, Shiv Nadar Foundation
T.S.R. Subramanian retired from public
service in India after a distinguished
career spanning 37 years. He has held
the highest civil service position viz.
the Cabinet Secretary to the Government
of India, as also the position of Chief
Secretary in Uttar Pradesh, the largest
state of India. He has held several
other high civil service posts in the
government of India and was the Director
of Industries in the State Government
of Uttar Pradesh.
On the developmental side, for about
5½ years, Subramanian worked with the
International Trade Centre, a specialized
trade promotion organization in the
UN system, promoted jointly by UNCTAD
and WTO, as a Senior Advisor.
Having dealt with policy formulation
and program implementation at the highest
national level in India, Subramanian
brings to the table his vast exposure
to the economic and social sectors,
rural/agriculture sectors, and industry
and commerce development at the federal
and state level.
Subramanian is an independent board
member of HCL Technologies Ltd and advises
Shiv Nadar on his philanthropic activities.
As Trustee of the Shiv Nadar Foundation,
he is guiding the VidyaGyan initiative.
KIRAN NADAR
Trustee, Shiv Nadar Foundation
Advertising professional, strategist
communication and brand building, international
bridge player, philanthropist and avid
art collector; these are few of the
many roles that Kiran Nadar has donned.
Today, she looks at her roles as the
Trustee of SSN Trust and Shiv Nadar
Foundation as the most vital of all
her other interests.
An advertising professional by background,
Kiran started her career in the Ad agency
MCM. Then came her stint at NIIT - a
company that grew out of Shiv Nadar's
vision for computer education in India.
Kiran is responsible for helping shape
the NIIT brand with Rajendra Pawar,
from its inception, in its advertising
and communication strategy and overall
brand building. She stayed with NIIT
for its first two and a half years.
She also an avid art collector and promotes
Indian art and artists as much as possible.
She plans to set up a museum to enable
her art collection to be seen by more
people and to increase awareness and
the value of Indian art. She is now
a member of the Rasaja Foundation, an
educational, scientific and cultural
institution created in 1984 by the late
Jaya Appasamy, renowned artist, art
historian and art critic. The aim of
the Rasaja Foundation is to bring to
the notice of the art fraternity and
the lay people its rare and valuable
collection of artifacts currently housed
at the National Gallery of Modern Art.
Kiran has been deeply involved in transformational
education through the SSN Institutions
and now VidyaGyan and the proposed Shiv
Nadar University. Drawing from her diverse
and rich experience in advertising and
communications for NIIT, she has played
a very important role in defining the
architecture and the distinct academic
ambience of the SSN Institutions and
VidyaGyan.
She is involved the Public Health Foundation
of India (PHFI) where Shiv Nadar is
a board member. She is also quietly
involved in an initiative of the Rajiv
Gandhi Foundation which sponsors the
education of muslim girl children in
key backward districts of Uttar Pradesh.
ROSHNI NADAR
Executive Director and CEO, HCL Corporation
Roshni Nadar brings a global outlook,
a strategic vision and a passion for
social enterprise and building institutions,
to her varied roles at HCL Corporation
and the Shiv Nadar Foundation. As CEO
and Executive Director of the HCL Corporation,
she is responsible for strategic decision
making regarding overall future directions
for the Corporation.
Roshni is a Trustee of the Shiv Nadar
Foundation, which among its many initiatives
has established the not for profit SSN
College of Engineering in Chennai, today
among the top ten private engineering
colleges in India. As a member of the
Management Committee of the SSN Institutions,
she is now driving several planning,
academic and administrative interventions
to maintain and progressively improve
the benchmarks set by the Institutions
in not just academics, but cutting edge
research and pedagogy.
She is involved hands on, in rolling
out the VidyaGyan schools in Uttar Pradesh,
a radical idea that will induct and
transform meritorious rural children
from economically disadvantaged backgrounds,
providing them free, world class education
- allowing them to transcend the disadvantages
they face and compete with their urban
counterparts. Roshni has also been involved
with the Rajiv Gandhi Foundation to
promote the education of the Dalit and
Muslim girl child in some of the most
backward districts of the state of Uttar
Pradesh, another socially transformational
initiative.
Roshni is also actively involved in
brand building across the HCL Enterprise
and the Shiv Nadar Foundation.
She has previously worked with Sky News,
UK and CNN in the production and programming
area and has substantial communications
and production experience in her assignments
with leading media houses in India.
Roshni pursued her undergraduate studies
from the Northwestern University, Evanston,
Illinois, majoring in radio, television
and film; and her MBA in Social Enterprise
Management & Strategy from the Kellogg
Graduate School of Management.
She loves to travel, enjoys yoga and
is trained in Indian classical music;
and lives in New Delhi, India, with
her family.
GOWRI ISHWARAN
'Educating each student to be a life
long learner and to grow into a caring,
sensitive, responsible citizen of the
world.'
These words have formed the basic guidelines
of the educating philosophy of Ms. Gowri
Iswaran. A Bachelor of Education in
English History, she has had over 25
years of experience in working with
children.
She has held various posts of high office
before becoming the Principal of Sanskriti
School in 1999.
She is very competent in the usage of
computers for education and administration
of the school - Having computerised
much of the school data such as the
School time-table, Parental Data, Staff
information and Final exam results.
She has introduced a totally new syllabus
for computer learning in school and
has Collaborated with Woodland Grange
School, Leicester, U K in an On-line
Project with students jointly creating
stories.
She is very committed to the cause of
the environment and has actively promoted
awareness among students and made it
an integral part of the school curriculum.
She is the resource person for teacher-training
programmes for the Education management
Centre of the DPS Society.
She has also been a part of an inclusion
Programme for Children with Special
needs and has effectively dealt with
children with emotional and behavioral
problems.
In recognition of her contribution to
education, Ms. Ishwaran has been felicitated
with several awards. A few noteworthy
being:
1. Presenting a paper on ''Teaching
at Cross Roads' at an International
Conference to be held at Tel Aviv from
2. 5 2 28th June 2007 at the Israel
Chapter of UNESCO.

Dr. (Ms.) KIRAN DATAR
Currently the Advisor of National Knowledge Commission, Government of India, Dr. Ms. Kiran Datar has to her credit over 45 years of experience in the field of education. Having started her career as a lecturer and reader in History, Dr. Kiran has held various posts such as Dean of Colleges, Officiating Vice Chancellor and Advisor at the University of Delhi.
She completed her Ph.D. in History from the Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi with International relations and American History as fields of specialization.
She has to her credit many awards and distinctions. Some of them being- the Fulbright Fellowship 1966-68, Dorothy Lee Grant in1977; Mahila Shiromani Award in 1994 (Excellence in chosen field of activity - Education), awarded by Smt. Vimala Sharma, the First Lady of India at Rashtrapati Bhavan ; Himotkarsh National Integration Award, 2005-2006 for Excellence in the Field of Education.
She has been the Lead speaker and active participant in many conferences and has several research papers published in National and International Seminars.
She has been actively associated with many of the leading schools of Delhi as a member of their Board of Governors and has also been a member of the Governing Body of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) for six years and a member on its Finance and Curriculum Committees.
She has also been appointed by the Chief Minister, National Capital Territory of Delhi as a member of the five member Advisory Committee to set up the Bharat Ratna Dr. B. R. Ambedkar University in the NCT.
Some of the books published by her are 'Malaysia: Quest for a Politics of Consensus', Vikas Publishing House, 1993 and 'United States of America: Two Centuries of Growth and Change', Directorate of Hindi Implementation Board, University of Delhi, 1997.
Dr. Datar has recently been appointed Chairperson of the Working Group on Undergraduate Education by the National Knowledge Commission to suggest means of raising standards and promoting excellence in undergraduate education and lives in New Delhi.
